Monaco had a sensational 2016/17 season. The French side managed to win their first league title in 17 years as well as reaching a Champions League semi final. The overall performance of the team saw 6 players earn a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.
Their side was filled with talented players who went on to make more special achievements.
Today we’re going to look at the careers of the players integral to this sides success and where they are now.
GK: Danijel Subašić
The Croatian keeper played an important role in winning the league and reaching the Champions League semi finals. His performances saw him be named Ligue 1’s goalkeeper of the year.
He left the club in 2020 to finish his career in his home country.
RB: Dijbril Sidibé
The Frenchman was also integral to Monaco’s Ligue 1 triumph and their Champions League campaign.
He was voted to be in UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year stayed at the club until 2022. However, his time at Monaco included a loan move to Everton in the 2019/20 season.
Dijbril was also apart of the 2018 World Cup winning French side.
He now currently plays for Greek side AEK Athens.
CB: Jemerson
Emerson was a regular starter in the 2016/17 season.
He left the club after terminating his contract in 2020 and now plays for the club that kickstarted his senior career, Atletico Mineiro.
CB: Kamil Glik
Glik was the usual partner of Jermerson for Monaco. He played a crucial role in winning the Ligue 1 title after making 36 appearances and scoring 6 goals. On top of that, he is another player that was included in the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year.
In 2020 he moved to newly promoted Seria A club Benevento and has stayed there ever since.
LB: Benjamin Mendy
Mendy only stayed at Monaco for one season before joining Manchester City in 2017. The Frenchman also won the World Cup but has since wasted his career.
He now is without a club as a result of his inexcusable behaviour.
RM: Bernardo Silva
Bernardo Silva spent two years at Monaco before joining Manchester City in 2017 where he currently plays.
His career has been nothing short of successful as he has won 5 premier league titles, including a treble.
He is one of the best midfielders in the premier league, let alone the world.
CM: Fabinho
Fabinho is another player that made the move to the Premier League. He left Monaco to join Liverpool in 2018.
He was for considered one of the best defensive midfielders in the league for a brief period of time. And had helped his side win the Premier League and Champions League.
CM: Tiémoué Bakayoko
Bakayoko left Monaco in 2017 to join Chelsea and was supposed to be the next big thing in the Premier League.
It’s safe to say he failed to live up to the expectations as his time at Chelsea was a flop.
His time at Chelsea was riddled with loans to Italian sides AC Milan and Napoli and even a return to Monaco in 2019.
Fat forward to 2023 and he is currently without a club.
LM: Thomas Lemar
Lemar had a lot of hype around him due to his performances for Monaco.
In the 2017 summer transfer window, he had clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal after him. Arsenal even put in a £92 million bid for him which was rejected in the end.
The following year, the Frenchman made the move to Atletico Madrid for €70 million. And this is where he currently plays.
ST: Radamel Falcao
Falcao was the main source of goals for this Monaco side. The Colombian scored 30 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions.
After two more years Falcao left the club to play for Galatasaray for a further two years. He now plays for Rayo Vallecano.
ST: Kylian Mbappé
As we all know, Kylian was the star boy go the team. At the age of 18 the Frenchman ended the 2016/17 season with 42 goal contributions in 46 appearances. This included 6 goals in the Champions League.
Mbappé credited senior striker Falcao as a key influence on him throughout the season, giving him the space to express himself.
At the end of the season Mbappé won Ligue 1 Young player of the Season, the Golden Boy award and was named in the liege 1 Team of the Season.
The following season he went on loan to PSG before signing permanently. He is a world beater that has been influential in two World Cups for his nation.
A big move away from France is expected very soon.
SUB: João Moutinho
The Portuguese international played the majority of games for Monaco. He then joined Wolves in 2018 where he stayed for 5 years and is currently a free agent.
